Can you tell us where the bloom is going to be tomorrow? To an extent, yes. We currently use our regional knowledge and local wind forecasts to estimate whether a bloom is likely to move, spread, or cause harm, and report the risk accordingly. However, we are working on improving our bloom movement predictive capability with coastal circulation models - so watch this space!

Hi,
Is it possible to get a single map which shows average or max algal bloom values around the coast for summer/winter periods.

Hi Ryan,
Yes this should be possible, but since this is generally fairly computationally intensive, it would most likely be calculated per request - at least for now. If there is enough interest we could potentially think of creating monthly mean and monthly anomaly Chl-a maps.
When you say "algal bloom values", are you referring to the Chl-a concentrations? Is there a specific area that you are interested in? Please feel free to contact me on MSmith2@csir.co.za to chat about this further.
Cheers, Marie
